Outreach Activities: 2005-06
During 2005-2006, the CPD continued its 21st year as the official outreach arm of the Education & Educational Psychology Department in accordance with CT State Department of Education and NCATE Teacher Preparation Program Approval standards and national CACREP accreditation standards.
CPD funded approx. $1100 worth of honoraria for guest speakers/representatives/materials from educational, cultural, professional and recreational organizations for five Summer School 2005 sections of ED 733 STAFF DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR.
CPD facilitated membership by the E&EP Department in the International Roots & Shoots organization. The Director forwarded weekly email announcements and program updates from the R&S organization to the E&EP Department.
CPD funded refreshments for four Student Teaching Triad meetings (September, December, January & May) to host WCSU student teachers, university supervisors and cooperating teachers. Participants including faculty, cooperating teachers and student teachers in attendance at the four sessions numbered 400.
CPD funded approx. $1200 worth of vouchers for instructional materials at the Danbury Teacher Parent Store and the Educational Warehouse for guest speakers and public school representatives in sections of the Elementary Education Professional Semester courses (ED 320, 351, 360, 400, and 440) for Fall 2005 and the sections of ED 320, 360, 415, 425, and 440 during Spring 2006.
CPD funded approx. $5000 worth of vouchers for instructional materials at the Danbury Teacher Parent Store and the Educational Warehouse for the placement of Elementary Education Professional Semester students in the following Danbury based Professional Development School partner sites – King Street Primary, Hayestown Elementary, Stadley Rough Elementary, Pembroke Elementary, Shelter Rock Elementary, Roberts Avenue Elementary, Morris Street Elementary, Park Ave Elementary and Mill Ridge Primary School.
CPD funded refreshments and prepared announcement flyers for two Counselor Education meetings with Practicum Supervisors and a Counselor Education meeting with the Counseling Advisory Board during Fall 2005 and Spring 2006.
The CPD Assistants (Ms. Palanzo & Ms. Hatch) delivered nine Thank You cakes to Professional Development School sites in Danbury and Bethel during Fall 2005 and three Thank You cakes to Professional Development School sites in Danbury during Spring 2006.
CPD Director facilitated the donation of surplus computer hardware/software to the Danbury based Harambee Youth Center that primarily serves students of color and clients from economically impoverished families.
Director Caruso and Dr. Janet Burke (CPD Board Member) received a $7500 grant from the CSU Board of Trustees to support the National Security Language Initiative by training CSU students in six critical languages: Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Hindi, Korean and Turkish using 24/7 online learning language modules developed by Rosetta Stone.
CPD officially affiliated with the WCSU chapter (founded 1968) of the Phi Delta Kappa International, a professional organization for educators. The affiliation will involve: rotating education exhibitions by PDK sponsored K-12 schools in the Westside display case; support for scholarships, mini-grants, memberships for WCSU faculty/students, Ed.D. candidates and other outreach activities.
CPD funded the annual Diversity at the University Program initiated by Director Caruso. The program continued under the leadership of Dr. Marsha Daria (CPD Board Member) and hosted 150 fifth grade students and their teachers on the Mid Town Campus for a full day of academic and cultural enrichment activities and campus tours.
CPD allocated $1200 of support for Danbury Public School’s 2006 “Sunsational Summer Camps” one month long academic tutoring and cultural enrichment programs scheduled at Mill Ridge Intermediate School and Morris Street Elementary School in June and July. The program offers enrichment activities to students ages 6-12 including a theme based weekly field trip.
CPD Director and the Administrative Assistant prepared the CPD Annual report as submitted to the University Senate and the projected 2005-06 spending plan to the CPD Advisory Board.
