Advanced Certificate Program in Interdisciplinary Gerontological Studies

Course of Study

The program requires the completion of 12 credits of graduate level course work with several options to meet both individual and professional learning needs. The program is designed for part- time study, with evening courses offered during academic and summer semesters.

Four interdisciplinary core and four professional discipline specific curses are currently offered. All courses are 3 credits.

  MGT 583 Continuum Gerontological Services
 
Discipline Specific Courses
  NUR 515 Advanced Pathophysiology
  MGT 584 Long Term Care Administration
  HPX 585 Physical Activity and Aging
  NUR 586 Advanced Practice: Gerontology Nurse Specialist

Depending on the discipline specific background of the student, individuals admitted into the Certificate Program can follow one of two pathways to achieve their 12 credits of coursework.

Pathway 1: General Interest
Complete all four of the following core courses. This pathway is designated for those individuals with an interest in gerontology (e.g., Health Education, Public Health, Community Health, Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, Psychology, Counseling or Social Work).

Four, 3-credit core interdisciplinary courses:
  PSY 580 Gerontology and Normative Aging
  HPX 581 Health Consideration and the Aged
  SW  582 Social Policies in Gerontology
  MGT 583 Continuum of Gerontological Services

Pathway 2: Discipline Specific Interest
Complete two or three (or 6-9 credits) of the core courses, and complete one to two (or 3-6 credits) of the following discipline specific course(s).

  • Individuals with a background in Physical Education, Wellness Management, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy or recreational Therapy may seek to complete:
    Three, 3-credit core interdisciplinary courses:

      HPX 581 Health Consideration and the Aged
      MGT 583 Continuum of Gerontological Services
     
    One, 3-credit discipline specific course:
      HPX 585 Physical Activity and the Aging
     
  • Individuals with a background in Nursing may seek to complete:

    Two, 3-credit core interdisciplinary courses:
      SW  582 Social Policies in Gerontology
      MGT 583 Continuum of Gerontological Services
     
    Two, 3-credit discipline specific courses:
      NUR 515 Advanced Pathophysiology
      NUR 586 Advanced Practice: Gerontology Nurse Specialist
     
  • Individuals with a background in Health Administration, Business Management, or Nursing Home Administration may seek to complete:

    Three, 3-credit core interdisciplinary courses:
      PSY 580 Gerontology and Normative Aging
      SW  582 Social Policies in Gerontology
      MGT 583 Continuum of Gerontological Services
     
    One, 3-credit discipline specific course:
      MGT 584 Long Term Care Administration
