Preliminary Research

The Red River Project is a collaborative, interdisciplinary project that brings together students and faculty from many different fields and disciplines throughout WestConn to study the effects of the globalization of Vietnamese water resources on the economy, culture, and environment of Vietnam.   During the 2006-2007 academic year, seven students who have been selected from the fields of economics, anthropology, political science, american studies, and history have been working together to develop student-centered research projects.  These seven students have taken an intensive two-semester seminar on Vietnamese politics and culture and on research design.  In addition, they have taken a two-semester sequence in intensive introductory Vietnamese.   In July and August 2007, the team will conduct field research in the National Library, Sino-Nom archives, and at field sites in the red river delta and at irrigation projects, water supply projects, and dams along the Hong and Da rivers.   We hope to turn our research into an interdisciplinary book on the subject.
