Sep. 8 GREEK RUSH (WestConn students only) The WCSU Greek Council will host a Formal Rush at 8 p.m. in the Lobby of the Student Center on the university's Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Sep. 11 DIVERSITY THEATRE PRESENTATION:  WestConn will host the hit off-Broadway production "Platanos and Collard Greens" at 5 p.m. in Ives Concert Hall in White Hall on the university's Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The play is a romantic comedy that tactfully addresses stereotypes, prejudices and urban myths that exist between African Americans and Latinos, within the context of hip-hop, humor and satire. Sep. 18 SCIENCE-AT-NIGHT:  WCSU Professor of Biological and Environmental Sciences Dr. Tom Philbrick will discuss "Exploring for Plants in Tropical Waterfalls" at 7 p.m. in Room 125 of the Science Building on the university's Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Philbrick's field research has taken him from Angel Falls (the tallest waterfall in the world) to the spectacular Iguazzu Falls in Brazil in search of a bizzare group of flowering plants called "Riverweeds." This presentation will summarize his field studies over the last 15 years in Central and South America. Topics will include his travels along jungle rivers of Brazil, Suriname and Venezuela, his discovery of species new to science and the extinction of other species, conservation and integration of students into his research. Sep. 21 IVES FAMILY FAIR:  The Ives Authority, under the auspices of the City of Danbury and in partnership with WestConn, will host "The Ives Family Fair," a daylong family event at Ives Concert Park on the university's Westside campus, Lake Avenue Extension in Danbury. Gates will open at 2 p.m., with community artists and musical acts taking the stage beginning at 2:30 p.m. The Ives Festival Orchestra, under the direction of Fernando Jimenez, will perform "Peter and the Wolf" with the Connecticut Ballet at 4 p.m. Also featured will be children's activities, hay rides and multicultural cuisine. Sep. 25 STEVEN NEUWIRTH LECTURE:  WestConn will honor the life and scholarship of the late Professor of English Dr. Steven D. Neuwirth with a discussion in his memory at 7 p.m. in Room 125 of the Science Building on the university's Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Reed College Professor of Political Science Dr. Darius Rejali will discuss his book, "Torture and Democracy." A reception and book signing will follow. Neuwirth was a specialist in Early American literature and American history, and made significant contributions to academic program development at WestConn from the 1980s until his retirement in 2003. Sep. 29 ALUMNI GOLF OUTING:  The WCSU Alumni Association will host a Golf Outing with a 10 a.m. shotgun start at the Richter Park Golf Club, 100 Aunt Hack Road in Danbury. Proceeds from the annual event will benefit the Alumni Association Scholarship Endowment. The cost is $700 per foursome or $175 per person. The public is invited; reservations are required. VISITOR PARKING ADVISORY: Western Connecticut State University offers several convenient, centrally located parking spaces for visitors to the university’s Midtown and Westside campuses in Danbury. Midtown visitor parking is in the lot next to Old Main and in designated spaces next to University Hall. Parking in the university’s White Street and Fifth Avenue garages is restricted to students, faculty and staff with hang-tags and/or parking stickers from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday; visitors are welcome to park in the garages all other times. Westside visitor parking is on University Boulevard. Visitors who cannot be accommodated in these parking areas are asked to call the University Police Department to make other arrangements.
