WESTFIELD, Mass. (April 2) – Westfield State overcame a 2-0 sixth-inning deficit to defeat Western Connecticut State University, 10-2, in a non-conference baseball game on Wednesday, April 2.
The Owls improved to 9-6 while the Colonials dropped to 7-11.
Westfield tied the score in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer by junior catcher Adam Franke (Monson).
The Owls scrapped for the winning run in the seventh, then erupted for seven runs in their final at bat in the eighth.
In the seventh, Justin Parr reached safely on a one-out infield error, advanced to second on a groundout, stole third base, and scored when Mike Trachtenberg beat out an infield hit.
Westfield executed its “Small Ball” offense to near perfection when it dropped down four bunts in its big eighth inning. Stroking two-run singles in the inning were pinch hitter Kevin Lyons, Jeff Fields and Cagney Turner.
Turner led the Owls’ 13-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with his two RBI. Scott McIntrye had a double and single and Trachtenberg was 2 for 5.
Josh Perches, the second of three Westfield pitchers, garnered the victory. He hurled three and a third innings, allowing one run and three hits and striking out two. Phil Towne threw the final two innings for the Owls’ eighth pitching save in nine victories.
Ryan Koschmieder collected two of Western Connecticut’s five hits and Rob Bedard pounded a double.
Freshman lefty Bill Armstrong was the losing pitcher. He threw seven innings, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out seven.
