NEIBA NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE ALL-STAR GAME AT FENWAY JUNE 14
WestConn's Matt Gardiner to take on the Green Monster
MEDFORD, MA – Many of New England’s top college baseball players will get
the opportunity of a lifetime to play at historic Fenway Park in the
2008 New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association’s (NEIBA) College
All-Star Game on Saturday, June 14 at 9:00 am.
A team of Division I All-Stars will play a squad made up of Division
II All-Stars and Division III Senior All-Stars in the annual game.
First pitch is scheduled for noon at Fenway.
WestConn senior catcher Matt Gardiner will play for the Division II/III. This past spring, he batted. .362 and led the Colonials in nine offensive categories. The occasional outfielder and designated hitter, had 54 hits, 19 doubles and eight home runs for the 17-25 Colonials. He also led the club in runs scored (38), runs batted in (40), total bases (97), slugging percentage (.651) and walks (20). He was second on the team with 149 at bats and 136 put outs.
The University Division
leads the series with a 21-10-1 record, but the College Division team
won last year’s game with a 2-0 shutout.
Prior to the game, the NEIBA will present its annual awards. Three
Teams of the Year will be recognized – Dartmouth in Division I,
Franklin Pierce in Division II and Trinity in Division III – along with
Coaches of the Year Bob Whelan (Dartmouth), Jayson King (Franklin
Pierce) and Bill Decker (Trinity). Bruce Joyce, formerly the coach at
Southern New Hampshire University and past president of the NEIBA, will
receive the Jack Butterfield Award, presented to a coach who exhibits
the integrity and dedication to the game that Coach Butterfield
displayed during his long career at the University of Maine. The
recently-established Kevin Burr Assistant Coach Award will be presented
to longtime Tufts assistant Bob Clarke. During the winter, John Claffey
of the Cape Cod League received NEIBA’s Andy Baylock Distinguished
Service Award.
