Tyler Martone makes 19 saves but its not enough as Colonials fall to 20th ranked Skidmore College, 8-3

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - (Mar. 13) - The Skidmore College men’s lacrosse team remained undefeated after Saturday’s 8-3 non-conference victory over Western Connecticut State University at Wachenheim Field.
The 20th-ranked Thoroughbreds improve to 3-0, while the Colonials fall to 1-3.
Skidmore got the scoring started when junior Matt Levesque (Duxbury, Mass.) scored off a feed from Cory Barkoff (Woodbury, N.Y.) at the 12:02 mark of the first period and would make it 2-0 10 seconds later on a goal from Alex Giaimo (Manhasset, N.Y.).
WestConn answered back with a Jim Dipientrantonio (Yorktown Heights, NY) goal at the 6:53 mark and tied it up when Sean Macey found the back of the net with 4:47 remaining in the first quarter.
The Thoroughbreds found themselves back in front 53 seconds into the second quarter when Barkoff scooped up a ground ball and beat Colonials' keeper Tyler Martone (Cheshire, CT). Barkoff added his second goal of the game with 2:37 remaining in the half and Rob Lutin (Port Washington, N.Y.) made it a 5-2 game when he scored at the 1:31 mark.
Skidmore made it 7-2 in the third quarter behind goals from Jeremy Goldman (Port Washington, N.Y.) and Giaimo. WestConn was able to add a goal late in the third when Adam Lanehart (Redding, CT) found Tom Begely (East Islip, NY) in front the goal. Levesque scored his second goal of the game on a man-up opportunity for an 8-3 lead with 10:02 remaining and that would be the final score as Skidmore held the Colonials scoreless in the fourth quarter.
Barkoff finished with two goals and an assist, while Levesque and Giaimo each tallied two goals and Lutin finished with a goal and two assists for the Thoroughbreds.
Skidmore outshot WestConn 27-12 as Flip Bongaerts finished with nine saves on 12 shots for the Thoroughbreds and Martone made 19 saves on 27 shots.
Skidmore won 9-of-14 faceoffs and committed 19 turnovers, compared to 35 turnovers committed by the Colonials.
The Thoroughbreds are at #14 Haverford on March 17 at 4 p.m. The Colonials travels to Trinity College in Hartford for another non-league affair on Wednesday, March 17.
