Melissa Teel named Little East Conference and NEWBA Player of the Week

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA and HOLYOKE, MA - (March 1)— Junior center Melissa Teel (Hamden, Conn.) has been named Little East Conference New England Women's Basketball Association Player of the Week for the week ending February 28.

It was the sixth time Teel earned the LEC's top weekly honor and third time this season that she has received the NEWBA award.

This past week, Teel helped the Colonials to their first LEC Tournament Championship since the 1993-94 season.

The center was named Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament after exploding for 19.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 5.0 blocked shots per game in her team's two wins.

Teel amassed 23 points, 13 boards and four blocks in Western Connecticut's 61-46 triumph over the University of Southern Maine in the title tilt on Saturday. It was her 23rd double-double of the season. One day earlier, she posted 16 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks in the Colonials 63-56 victory over Keene State College.

Over the course of the week, Teel converted 76.2% (16-21) of her shots from the field. Western Connecticut will travel to Bowdoin College for an NCAA Tounament First Round contest against the University of New England on March 5.
