Governor, legislature support higher education with campus enhancements
Drivers on Danbury’s White Street in mid-May noticed a large crowd of people, news crews and a lot of excitement on the day that Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell visited WestConn’s Midtown campus to announce that $12.1 million to fund the design of a new Fine and Performing Arts Instructional Center on the university’s Westside campus is expected to gain approval when the state Bond Commission meets at the end of the month.
We want the young people who will study, learn and grow at WestConn in the years to come to have the finest facilities to help them reach their goals and realize their dreams.Speaking before an appreciative crowd of faculty, staff and students, Rell said, “The changes at WestConn over the past several years have been remarkable, and the good news continues. WestConn is already viewed as a leader in the region’s fine arts scene, and this building will further elevate the university’s stature. We want the young people who will study, learn and grow at WestConn in the years to come to have the finest facilities to help them reach their goals and realize their dreams.
The 169,000-square-foot building is expected to include an 800-seat concert hall, a 500-seat proscenium theatre, a 200-seat recital hall, a 200-seat studio, an art gallery, classrooms, conference rooms, lab rooms, choral and orchestra rooms, 52 practice rooms, rehearsal rooms, a recording studio and office space for faculty and support staff.
