Political aspirations are one of many interests that can be explored at WestConn
It would be easy to conclude that Derek B. Roy has an identical twin — or maybe even two — because he seems to be in so many places at once that there can’t possibly be only one of him. But the Senior Political Science major is really just a master of time management, prioritizing his goals and taking advantage of all that WestConn has to offer.
I’ve learned so much from so many different faculty and staff members — and not just what’s on the syllabus, but other important things in life, too.
“It really is all about time management,” Roy explains. “I’m here to go to school, but there are also so many things to do on campus. It’s so easy to get involved. There’s a lot I’m interested in and there is so much to choose from at WestConn.”
Stroll past a Warner Hall classroom on the Midtown campus and there’s Roy, actively participating in a classroom discussion about U.S. foreign policy with Associate Professor of Political Science Dr. Christopher Kukk, a Fulbright scholar and former U.S. Army Counter-Intelligence Officer. Head over to University Computing a while later, and there he is again: in his capacity as the ResNet Support Team Supervisor, where he teaches information technology and hires, trains and supervises student employees to staff the University’s Computer Centers.
Catch a shuttle over to the Westside campus and you’ll find Roy at the Westside Classroom Building, taking a Justice and Law Administration course with legal scholar and Professor Emeritus Dr. Harold Schramm to fulfill requirements for his chosen minor. And there he goes again: Roy just drove by with a flashing blue light on the dash of his SUV. He’s most likely just been paged to a fire in the area; he’s a volunteer fire fighter with Engine 3 at the Padanaram Hose Co. in Danbury.
